SOS Approach to Feeding Workshop
The Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S) Approach to Feeding workshop is a trans-disciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems from birth to 18 years. It integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical, and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. The 3.75-day basic conference is designed for babies, toddlers, and small children. Other ages and special populations are covered in the advanced workshops for which this training is a prerequisite.

- Identify oral, sensory, motor, cognitive and emotional developmental milestones key to feeding
- Recognize and describe the major reasons why children won’t eat, as based on learning theory principles
- Identify physical, behavioral, motor, oral-motor, and sensory factors as a part of a feeding assessment Apply behavioral and social learning principles, and systematic desensitization, to feeding problems
- Create and implement a S.O.S feeding program for toddlers and young children, in group and individual treatment formats
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This Conference is intended for professionals who work with children with Feeding Difficulties. This includes: Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Special Educators, Early Intervention Specialists, Nurses, Physicians, Dietitians, Mental Health Workers, other Child Care Providers and Educators.
Note: Training conferences are created for professionals. If parents wish to attend the training workshop, they must be accompanied by their child’s feeding therapist.
The focus of the Conference will be assessing and treating infants and young children with Feeding Difficulties and Feeding Disorders. This includes “problem feeders” who may have mild to moderate neurological impairments and/or medical disorders, children with Autism Spectrum disorders, children with motor, oral-motor and/or sensory dysfunction, as well as the “picky eater”.
- This course is a total of 28.5 contact hours.
- This course is offered for 2.85 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level, Professional content area). This course will focus on the treatment SOS Approach to Feeding and will not discuss other similar or related treatments. Not available for partial credit.
- AOTA continuing education credit awarded: 28.5 hours (2.85 CEUs)
- STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder is an AOTA Approved Provider of Continuing Education. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
- To fulfill attendance requirements, participants must sign-in and sign-out at the start of the activity, at the lunch break and at the conclusion of the activity.
- Other Associations – Please contact your association to inquire as to whether this course will meet the requirements for continuing education credits. We are happy to provide any additional information for submission if requested.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
All participants are expected to stay the entire duration of each day to receive credit for attendance. Late arrivals or early departures on any days will not be accepted. CEUs and Certificates of Attendance will not be given to participants that are late or leave early.
Once registered, please ensure to make arrangements for travel and transportation that will allow you to stay until 5:00pm each day and until 3:15pm on the last day.

Cancellation must be received in writing no later than July 1, 2019 to receive a refund, minus a $75 Administration Fee. Please be aware there will be NO REFUNDS after July 1st deadline for any reason (health or otherwise). Staff must be notified of substitutions at least 24 hours before the start of the event. Please also note, Dr. Toomey does not allow her material to be handed out if an individual is unable to attend the conference. Nor does she allow individuals to stream or conference call this workshop.
As previously mentioned participants are expected to attend the course for the entire length of each day (8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Days 1-3), and 8:00 am to 3:15pm on the last day in order to receive their Certificate of Attendance and their full CEU credits. Participants will miss crucial information needed to be able to correctly use the SOS Approach to Feeding program if they come late or leave the course early. Please make all travel arrangements to ensure you do not arrive late or need to leave early on any day. Exceptions of the above is not at the discretion of the hosting organization but are the guidelines put in place by Dr. Toomey and Toomey and Associates.
